The ethos of the books is somewhat modern bearing in mind the period described, having witchcraft, adultery, homosexuality, ghosts and murder in the story. A lot of sadness in this book, but hope as well, although I have to say I do not like the Shrubs' storyline at all, nor the way Charlotte reacted to her "surprise encounter. Not only are they entertaining, but they teach us so much about life - and enable us to live vicariously through characters who experience more drama than we do!The story started moving, and the pieces started making sense together–I still felt like I was playing catch up the whole time, though. And the exceptionally compelling, well-paced plot is filled with familial dynamics, drama, emotion, self-discovery, secrets, revelations, love, loss, heartbreak, courage, duty, and passion all surrounded by authentic historical events of the time.
