Thus, in PU (polyurethane) coat is used for the Pink balls. Polyurethane also protects the ball from corrosion and scuffs. 7. Swing and bounce In time, things have changed and white leather balls are now used for all limited overs matches, irrespective of the time of day at which they are played. A great deal of effort and emphasis is placed on ensuring that the performance characteristics of the balls are the same," he added.

Many players claim the white balls used for limited-overs games have more swing and more sting than the more traditional cherry-red ones. The red ball offers swing when it is new. Opening is considered the most difficult batting position in Test matches as batters have to deal with the swing that the new ball offers, subject to quality of bowlers, pitch and weather conditions. Once the ball gets old, it offers reverse swing for the bowlers. To reap the benefits of reverse swing, the fielding team has to work meticulously to maintain the shine on one side of the ball as the innings commences. The other side becomes rough due to wear and tear. White Ball: Before Pink color, ball makers had tried optic yellow and bright orange color balls for the day-night games. But in case of the patchy outfield, or less green and more brown outfield, it did not work out that well. The Pink color ball I received well by the players could eventually replace traditional Red color ball as the Day-Night Test match is the future of the game. White balls are still best suited for Twenty-20 matches due to its swing and reverse swing features while Pink ball has its limitation with the reverse swing. Eventually, the Pink ball became the apt alternative to the Red ball. Why was the Color Pink Chosen as an Alternative to the Red ball?

The various processes that are involved in making the white ball are similar in every aspect to the way the red ball is made," said Stuart Waterton, brand manager of Kookaburra Sport UK. Many casual players use a tennis ball wrapped in layers of some type of adhesive tape (often electrical tape), which makes the relatively soft tennis ball harder and smoother. This is commonly referred to as a tape ball. A common variant is to tape only half the tennis ball, to provide two different sides and make it easy to bowl with prodigious amounts of swing. Pink balls are better to grip during dew compared to the Red balls. The linen present in the Pink ball seam absorbs the dew and hence helps with a better grip. 6. Coating and its effect Baseball (ball): Traditionally made quite similarly, with a cork centre (today usually rubber) wrapped tightly with string and encased in leather.Murzello, Clayton (20 March 2012). The shine comes with extra polish on the surface of the white ball and interestingly, due to this extra polish, the white ball swings more than the red ball. When it comes to the pink ball, there is not much difference from the red ball. Both the balls are used in Test matches with the pink one specifically used in Test matches played under lights. The key distinction between this and other balls is that it is mostly machine-made, with the two outside rows of seams machine-stitched and the two interior rows hand-stitched. The ball does not swing since the seam is deeply rooted in the cork surface. The hand stitched inner rows help to hold the bowl's two cups together, while the outer seams serve to provide grip to the bowlers as pronounced seams are missing in these types of balls. The key difference between the Pink and Red ball is the way leather is processed and the color is applied. In the case of Red balls, the color is applied by dying it with Red color. The Red ball gets its color from the dying. Once the stitching of the ball is complete, the seam is often quite raised. Furthermore, the ball is not completely rounded shape. In a match situation, all balls are fairly uniform irrespective of their colour. There are those specifications relating to weight and circumference which are to be followed and enforced by the match officials.

The Kookaburra is another red ball used for Test matches in Australia, Bangladesh, New Zealand, Pakistan, South Africa, Sri Lanka, and Zimbabwe. Manufactured in Australia, the Kookaburra usually swings for the first 30 overs but it becomes easier for batters to play their shots soon after. The trials are the latest steps in development of the new ball, with an aim of it being an option for major international league play in late 2020.The Red balls are not suited for night games as under floodlights they turn brownish. White balls are way better in terms of visibility under floodlights. Besides, while watching a match on television sets, the White color ball pops nicely. 3. Durability and Appearance The idea of Day-Night matches was coined to increase the footfall at the Test matches, as a large number of followers could watch the matches after work hours. Seam for the White ball is crisper and fully synthetic, whereas the Pink ball seam is a mixture of synthetic and linen. 5. Dew effect and grip Cork is used to make the core of the ball while the string is used to wrap the body several times for reinforcement. Leather is then wrapped over both cork and string. This is how the ball is prepared. Interestingly, the leather is either dyed red or white depending on the type of format that is being played. The main difference between the red and pink ball is that both balls differ with regard to the colors the balls produce under the yellow floodlights, thread colors used, the size of the seams, and the peculiar swing and bounce of the balls.
