I started reading this one with no expectations. Good or bad, I was not going to care. I just jad to read it. The book has been slowly getting its audience ever since it got published.

Okay. Let me go with the old classics and start off by stating what I know: a synopsis and the few concrete opinions I have. To write a review about “Solitaire” turns out to be more difficult than I thought it would be. Mostly because I still don’t know where I stand with the book or rather on which side I came out of? About half of the people who read it loved it and the other half seems to dislike it pretty strongly. There rarely seems to be anything in between and I totally get why the opinions about this book are so varied. It’s not an easy book to like, because Tori Spring is not your typical MC. And I don’t even mean that she’s an anti-hero, she’s just not someone you’d like to be friends with and her life and the people she surrounds herself with are all pretty bland and uncongenial. I know the main character is relatable for many and I hope that any of you who read this will understand that anything I say in this is nothing against your or your experiences. The beautiful and light parts, the really ugly and dark parts, the comfortable parts, the hard parts, the selfish parts, the selfless parts, all the realistic parts. When I got a few percent into this book, I knew the author had to be around my age, because this book feels so real. I mean, every element of this book feels really real, but the friendship between France and Aled specifically felt really real to me. Frances and Aled’s friendship felt so much like me and a person I miss with all my heart’s friendship. But I wasn’t as good of a friend, like Frances was, but this book really made me wish that I would have been. We were so important to each other. We’d tell each other everything and anything. We were each other’s first everything. First and only everything. He’s – he’s an angel.” All the things that happen in the book are what lead to the ending. No matter if it’s the sudden appearance of Michael Holden and Lucas Ryan or the mystery about Solitaire that runs through the entire book like a golden thread. No matter if it’s Tori’s complicated relationship with her mother and friends or her closeness to Charlie and the things she had to witness. They all come together in the end and they collide. I guess you could say all those things and especially Michael Holden and Solitaire work as some sort of catalyst that inevitably leads us to the ending of the story. Just like a musical crescendo. It builds and builds until it finally explodes.

So in this book we follow Frances, a studying machine who is a huge fangirl of a podcast (for a podcast? What is the proper grammar for “fangirl”). She then finds out that a total dweeb named Aled is the one making it, and they become friends and whatnot and are wildly successful and drama ensues or whatever. Aled has a lot of family drama. Things go down. Basically, sometimes a family can be you, your Very Platonic best friend, his boyfriend who he's very in love with, your lowkey ex-girlfriend who is also your best friend’s brother, and this girl who keeps ditching class to hang out with you and who you DEFINITELY should date. Ultimately this is a book about family and friendship. The family dynamic between the Spring siblings is one of the best I’ve read about. They’re a bunch of precious human beings who deserve for good things to happen to them. They’re trying to make their way through this world the best way they can, sometimes they fail, but they got each other to help them get up when they fall.

It's highly relatable and highly sarcastic. No wonder I read this in a day. This was even better than her debut novel. Overall, I adored Radio Silence for its uniquely realistic writing and three-dimensional diverse cast. I’d recommend it to everybody, but in particular if you’re looking for a diverse contemporary read, or have enjoyed the podcast Welcome to Night Vale. She even kind of admits how bitter, pessimistic, and boring she is when she says this at one point:

At one point, Tori gets recruited to be part of kind of a campus lookout type programme. Solitaire is pranking the school and they want students to patrol the school and be on the lookout for them (break-ins, suspicious behaviour, etc.). So the leader gives Tori her number just in case she sees anything while on her watch and...Carys ran away from home after her year 11 results day, perhaps because of her poor relationship with her mum and her mum's reaction to her terrible grades. Frances mentions throughout the novel that she blames herself for Carys running away because Frances kissed her and Carys reacted badly. Aled's story about his mum burning Carys' clothes is the piece of the puzzle that finally helps Frances to work out February Friday because of references to fire in Universe City. Because Frances knows that this whole time Aled has been trying to reach out to Carys, who he hasn't heard from since she disappeared, Frances decides that the best way to help Aled is to find Carys and get her to help him.
