Beyond Words is now an award-winning small charity with a growing impact, even finding new ways to reach people during the pandemic. In Beyond Words, readers travel to Amboseli National Park in the threatened landscape of Kenya and witness struggling elephant families work out how to survive poaching and drought, then to Yellowstone National Park to observe wolves sort out the aftermath of one pack's personal tragedy, and finally plunge into the astonishingly peaceful society of killer whales living in the crystalline waters of the Pacific Northwest. This book inspired me to read a number of other books on animal psychology and behaviour, all fascinating. There are lengthy sections devoted to the study of elephants, wolves and killer whales, alternately known as orcas (Orcinus orca).

Our picture stories do provide information, but the main aim of the books is to open up conversations, conversations that make it possible to check for understanding, support decision-making, share past experiences, prepare for new ones, and explore feelings. The author of this book though seems overly concerned with trying to embed his personality into the pages. Please ensure that the necessary support and safeguards are in place before sharing the images with someone who may find them upsetting. Carl Safina’s lyrical non-fiction writing explores how humans are changing the living world, and what the changes mean for non-human beings and for us all. Humourous and heart-breaking in equal measure, I genuinely believe that this is one of the best books that I have ever read. The book draws on what was important for the participants when they were ill and dying and demonstrates best practice as identified by them. Animals are directly affected by human pressures, and in encountering (and listening) to the minds of other animals Carl Safina hears what animals need humans to know about our shared life. Animals think, mourn, dream, make plans, and communicate complex messages in much the same way that we do. Cynthia helped pioneer the deceptively complex task of simply seeing elephants doing elephant things.

Your dog genuinely loves you, as you, in your domesticated state, activating the deep, old parts of your brain, love your dog. A wonderful tour of how animals think and feel and plea to afford them respect as beings worthy of better stewardship of their fate by the planet’s masters. There are many forays into discoveries from study of chimps, bonobos, birds, and even reptiles and insects to enhance his themes. Sit down beside the person you are supporting and offer them the book, asking them to turn the pages themselves. The pictures show how she talks to her supporter and is helped by her to establish some friendships. It is easy to read, packs a wealth of scientific information, encourages you to see the world from a different perspective but ultimately leaves you to drawer your own conclusions. Many people fantasize that if they won the lottery, they would quit their job and immerse themselves in leisure, play, family, parenthood, occasional thrilling sex; they'd eat when they were hungry and sleep whenever they felt sleepy. In this book, he delves into the inner worlds through 4 parts – elephants, wolves, orcas and comparisons to other animals.
